I used to wonder what it would be like,

To live in the world of a young adult novel.
Would I rise like a heroin,
Could I stand tall and defend the helpless?
Or would I fall to the regime?
Then I watched Paris Fashion Week.
The ultra-wealthy dressed like the like the height of fashion-
Puffed sleeves, modern dress shapes, sky-high hair, dramatic makeup -
And I thought,
I have seen this before.
This sounds familiar.
Are we in the Capitol?
Is this a parade of Effie Trinket’s walking before my eyes -
While homelessness is at record highs,
And the average Joe struggles to pay their rent,
The rich extort the p
oor and live off the sweat of their brow.
Are we sure we are not in Panem?
Because it seems like we are living through the Hunger Games -
Starvation, Destruction, The Trafficking of Children.
And what am I doing about it?
Nothing.
This might be familiar.
I do not want to admit it,
But I am doing the same thing as everyone else -
Watching the games.
So, I turn on the TV.
And I see a world divided by factions fighting for control.
They are fighting for control of the world -
Control over OUR lives.
One faction wants to control what a woman can do with her body,
Dictate when she can and cannot have children,
Because apparently, she can’t decide that for herself.
Sound familiar?
The Giver.
The Handmaid’s Tale.
Brave New World.
Uglies.
But will saying it out loud even change a thing?
We edit and change the news at a moment's notice,
Just like in 1984.
Don’t believe me?
Check how many times that news article was ‘updated.’
Does it tell you why?
Are you starting to see that this is familiar now?
We may not be living on a farm,
But the animals are running the show.
They are working us into the ground,
Because the more tired we are -
The less we know.
And what do we do about it?
We take our saccharine pills,
Turn on our screens,
And go to sleep.
Like good little working drones.
This should sound familiar.
Because we are living in dystopian times.
What are we doing about it?
